Background of the Study
Contemporary Nigerian literature is characterized by a rich interplay of linguistic features that reflect the country’s diverse cultural and social milieu. This study examines the morphosyntactic features—combinations of morphological and syntactic structures—present in contemporary Nigerian novels. Authors employ innovative word formations, varied sentence structures, and creative grammatical constructions to express complex ideas and cultural narratives (Chukwu, 2023). By comparing selected novels from different regions and genres, the study aims to identify recurring patterns and deviations in language use. These morphosyntactic features not only contribute to the aesthetic quality of the literary work but also serve as markers of cultural identity and linguistic evolution. The analysis will focus on aspects such as verb conjugations, clause structures, and the use of code-switching. Understanding these features is crucial for literary scholars, linguists, and educators, as it provides insights into the dynamic nature of language in modern Nigerian literature (Chukwu, 2023; Olatunde, 2024). The study ultimately seeks to bridge the gap between linguistic theory and literary analysis by offering a comprehensive evaluation of morphosyntactic innovations in Nigerian novels.
Statement of the Problem
There is a paucity of research on the morphosyntactic characteristics of contemporary Nigerian literature. While individual novels have been analyzed for thematic content and stylistic devices, few studies have focused on the underlying linguistic structures that shape narrative form and cultural expression. This gap limits our understanding of how morphosyntactic innovations reflect broader social and linguistic trends in Nigeria. Without systematic analysis, educators and literary critics may miss important insights into the evolution of language in Nigerian novels. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic features in selected contemporary works (Chukwu, 2023; Olatunde, 2024).
